Put Your Dog On A Treadmill!

Read 160 times since Monday, July 26, 2010

There are so many people out there in the world that have a passion for dogs. You even might be one of them!

They can be so much fun to have in your company, but you always need to keep one thing in mind: Dogs need constant attention and care to be healthy and live a long, happy life.

That involves bathing them, feeding them, and grooming them. Another thing that is important to do is to make sure you walk them regularly.

This is a great time for your pet to get out into the fresh air and be able to move their muscles a bit so they stay fit and healthy. It's also fun for them too!

It can be even fun for you as an owner. You get to go on a walk yourself and see your beloved pet in a happy mood.

You may even want to run around with them when you are out in the neighborhood. There are so many benefits to doing it.

Unfortunately, you can't walk your dog year-round. During the winter months, snow pile-ups may make it impossible for you and your pup to get a good walk in.

This could even be true in the summer months. With that thick coat of fur on them, your pet may overheat easily and it may not be such a good idea to expose them for the sun for that long.

So what should you do in this situation? Should the summer and winter months be a break time for your pooch? A time where they can sit and be lazy?

No, it shouldn't. In fact, there's a great alternative to walking your pet outside that gets the job done. It's using a treadmill.

Treadmills are a great way to get your dog the crucial exercise that they need. You can use them when it's not feasible to go outside, or you can use the treadmill in conjunction with regular outside walks.

Using it in conjunction with the regular type can be very beneficial. Many dogs are very hyper when they first start running outside and it can be a strain on you holding the leash.

You can alleviate this by putting the pooch on a treadmill for several minutes before you go outside. This will ensure that they get their "wiggles" out and don't drag you everywhere around the neighborhood at 20 miles per hour.

It needs to be understood that your pet won't be able to run a marathon a treadmill after one time of use. Because they might understand exactly what the machine is at first, you need to gradually introduce the concept to the pet.

This could mean starting out very, very slowly to introduce them to it. You could either get them accustomed to standing on the machine while it is not running, or you could put a leash on them and jump on the treadmill with them while it is moving very slowly.

At first when you turn it on, the dog might get scared to see the ground moving underneath them and they will quickly jump off. Using gradual methods will ensure that the pooch will get used to it slowly.

But once they get used to it, they won't be able to get enough of it. They will look like a professional runner with their little paws running on the contraption.

Despite the benefits of this canine exercise, there are still some things that you should be warned about. First, you should never leash your pooch on the rails of the treadmill.

If for some reason the canine gets scared and wants to jump off, the leash might prevent them from doing so and they could easily sustain an injury. It's also a good idea never to leave your canine unattended on the machine.

You always need to be there to supervise and make sure nothing goes wrong. Finally, you need to make sure that you don't push your canine too hard when they are exercising on it.

Even though they may look fine, dogs don't have as much stamina as humans do. Twenty minutes should be the maximum time that they are running on the treadmill.
