What is Zumba?

Zumba is a dance fitness program that is extremely popular among women who love to dance and want to lose weight in the evenings. Where did Zumba come from?

Ironically, the very first Zumba instructor was the choreographer/dancer Alberto "Beto" Perez. The irony is based in the fact that Zumba did not exist yet. However, in the early 1990's, Perez inadvertently forgot his aerobics tape for the class he was instructing in Colombia. He took the Latin Salsa and merengue audio tapes from his car and improvised his aerobics class to incorporate this music and Zumba was born. In 1999, he introduced Zumba fitness to the US.

The choreography involved, whether it is a free Zumba class or not, incorporates the following elements of other styles of music such as belly dance, Bollywood (the largest cinema producing region in India), hip-hop, mambo, martial arts, merengue, salsa, and samba. Additionally, both FREE Zumba classes and paid membership classes use lunge and squat moves or exercises in the routines. So you can see why this is more popular with many women instead of spending money on alcohol in a bar.

Tips for finding the right Zumba instructor

Although it is a bit intimidating at first, Zumba is fun. Not to mention the fact that it's a great way to lose weight and get back into shape. You might want to consider joining a free Zumba class first instead of paying for a membership. Here are 3 tips for finding the best instructor.

Check out the facility, especially the flooring. Good flooring means your feet will be comfortable while exercising. Make sure the Zumba instructor is certified to teach free Zumba classes or otherwise. Finally, you want to make sure that they have a background in dancing. Even if it is ballroom or classic dancing, this is better than no background at all. The bottom line is that Zumba is a great body-shaping, fat-burning workout that is fun for people of all ages.
