The Ins And Outs Of Bikinis

Read 175 times since Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Bikinis are a two-piece bathing suit designed for women. They are generally worn while swimming or sun bathing. This type of swimwear is composed to look like the undergarments of a woman. The top piece is made to cover the breasts. The bottom piece is made to cover the buttocks and groin area. The rest of the body is left uncovered.

In 1946, Louis Reard and Jacques Heim created what is known today as the bikini. Reard, a French engineer, named the suit after the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. Today, many consider this style of swimsuit the most popular form of beachwear for women. The popularity of bikinis has led to the popularity of bikini waxing and sun tanning.

There are many variations of the modern-day bikini. Some are designed to provide full coverage and others are designed to provide little to no coverage. Some modern variations on the bikini: hikini, camikini, tankini, seekini and monokini.

These swimsuit tops come in different colors, patterns and cuts. The different cuts alter appearance and dictate the amount of support. Triangle tops are the most traditional. They are known to sculpt and elevate the breasts. Push-up styles are modeled after push-up bras and are intended to increase the appearance of the bust. Women with larger breast tend to prefer the halter-top suits because they offer more coverage and support. Strapless bandeau tops, which contain a rectangular strip of fabric, can minimize the appearance of large breasts.

The swimsuit bottoms come in different colors, patterns and cuts as well. The different cuts dictate the amount of coverage. Thong and g-string bottoms provide virtually no buttocks coverage. However, briefs, shorts and briefs with skirts, offer complete coverage. They are comparable to underwear bottoms. Between maximum and minimal coverage there is moderate coverage. Bottoms that have narrow sides, v-cuts in the front, high sides and strings on the side provide a fair amount of coverage.

Female beach volleyball players wear bikinis. Since 1994, the official attire for Olympic beach volleyball has been the bikini. These swimsuits are worn because they accommodate performance and not because they are fashionable. Still, there are critics. These individuals criticize the uniforms and attribute the increase in popularity of the sport to the outfits the athletes wear. Olympic athletes who participate in track and high jump have worn adaptations of this swimwear.

There have been many objections to female athletes wearing bikinis. There is not much dispute over women wearing swimwear in swimming or bodybuilding competitions. Most protesters are against uniform regulations for beach volleyball. They believe the uniforms are impractical, too sexy, exploitative and draw attention. It may be true that these uniforms draw attention. They have been considered an important marketing element for these sports.

The mankini is the male edition of the bikini. It is similar in style and cut to form-fitting underwear. The design may feature low or high side panels, no flap or button front and tie or string sides. Models, musicians and bodybuilders are just some examples of men who have worn these garments on stage.
