Understanding How Fitness And Exercise Can Affect Your Mental Health

Read 83 times since Wednesday, July 20, 2011

If you are interested in improving both your physical and mental health, you may be surprised to find that there is an intricate connection between the two. More and more research has established that there is a very real connection between exercise and mental health.

Every year, many people are diagnosed with depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more. They are all very dangerous to your health, and can even threaten your life if they are not treated in the proper way.

They also share something else in common-those with a sedentary lifestyle may be more prone to these problems. The less you exercise, the more at risk you may be.

With the kind of lifestyle most us live today, it is not surprising that the number of cases involving these diseases is increasing. Many people spend more time every year in front of the television, the computer, and more.

Deciding to take charge of your mental health and your fitness is a very important step to overall wellness in your life. Mental health may be improved and achieved through consistent, effective exercise.

Balanced diet, good lifestyle, and exercise are very important things to implement into your life. However, we all know they are not that easy to follow- we also know that the benefits of these things are worth the sacrifices.

Doctors and researchers will all endorse exercise as a wonderful way to positively affect your life, and your health. Many studies show that people who regularly exercise are not just physically healthy, but may be more psychologically healthy as well.

After all, exercise brings mental benefits as well as physical. Most people know that regular exercise can keep us healthy as it shaves off unwanted fats that have accumulated in the body.

Exercise not only works to strengthen and sculpt our major muscles, but also improves the strength and health of our lungs and heart as well. Healthy lungs and heart will be able to distribute necessary amounts of oxygen to other parts of the body.

When we exercise, we can actually boost our immune system, and improve our immunity to most types of illness. Regular exercise can lower the risk of injuries and mental illness.

A person who exercises regularly, at least three to four times a week, can be more alert and have a higher energy level than those who do not. This allows them to be more productive on a daily basis, which can help to keep you mentally healthy.

This mental alertness and higher energy can be achieved through thirty to forty five minutes of cardio exercise on a daily basis, such as biking, walking, running, swimming, and any other kind of aerobic activity. The more you exercise the more stress relief you may find, which allows you to function better on a daily basis.

Regular fitness also can help you to sleep more regularly at night. Those who regularly suffer from sleep insomnia are usually advised to exercise to help you achieve sleep more easily every night.

The more sleep you get, the healthier you may be both physically and mentally. Sleep is incredibly important for the ability to cope with stress, change, illness, etc.

One of the most important contributions of regular exercise to the body goes more than the physical level. As you notice, people who are regularly active tend to feel good about themselves, as they feel healthier, and more confident on a daily basis.

Confidence can come through fitness and health. When we feel good, we actually release a certain hormone from our body which contributes to good mood-this hormone is called endorphin.

This hormone can also help us to deal with depression, anxiety, and other forms of mental illness. While it certainly is not a complete cure for any kind of mental disorder, it can help to prevent the development of problems with your mental health later in life.

Talk to your doctor about starting a regular exercise program to improve both your physical and mental fitness. Today is the perfect time to turn your life around, and begin your path toward a healthier you.

Try introducing regular exercise into your routine, and improving your diet. You may notice that you develop more energy and more peace of mind, while experiencing the ability to sleep better each night.
