3 Simple Steps To Getting Fit And Healthy While Living In London

Read 52 times since Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Arguably the most famous city in the world, London has something for everyone and attracts millions upon millions of people to its many world famous attractions and supposed golden paved streets each and every year.

Of these many visitors, while most return home wanting to book another holiday as soon as they have the opportunity, there are some people who look at making the move to London a permanent one, as they look to take up employment in the city.

As fantastic as this may be and as much as most people will tell you to take the opportunity with both hands if you are offered a job in England's capital city, if not just for the life experience, there are some downsides to living in such as vast, varied and fast paced city, with one of the most prominent being the fact it's all too easy to fall into a routine of eating poorly and not getting any exercise.

While this may be a generalisation, the truth is that for people who move to London for the first time, they can get so caught up in working all hours, the wonderful social scene and the many attractions that the city boasts, trying to keep on top of a regular exercise routine and maintain a recommended level of weight can be difficult.

However, it doesn't have to be overly difficult, as long as you are prepared and have an idea in mind of what to do, something that the following three points should help with.

1. Don't get a monthly Oyster pass - this might sound a little crazy, as a monthly Oyster pass (which entitles you to reduced fares on the London Underground and buses) is something that many Londoners rely on, but if you can not get into the habit of using the Tube to begin with, you'll find that you can walk to many places in not much more time than it would take on the Tube.

Of course, going to a gym in London is a fantastic way to stay in shape, but it's understandable that you might not always be able to get to a gym in London often, so walking regularly is a great way to keep on top of your weight.

2. Prepare meals in advance - eating healthily is the aspect that many people find most difficult, as they believe that because they don't have time on an evening to prepare a meal or on a morning to get their lunch ready for work, they can't eat healthily.

The key point when preparing your meals is time and if you can set aside a few hours on a weekly basis, not only will you be able to produce a substantial amount of meals, but you'll find you can produce particularly healthy ones, too.

One of the best things to do is to try and prepare all of your meals for during the week on a weekend, freeze them and then all you have to do is reheat them after you get in from work - just like a shop bought microwaveable meal, but considerably healthier.

3. Restrict your social activities - although part of the whole experience of living in London is to take advantage of the fantastic social side that is so often raved about, it's important that you realise if you don't have much will power, it can be all too easy to find yourself going out for food and drinks every night.

And although this might sound like your idea of heaven, the truth is it will do nothing for your health.

By restricting your eating out and drinking activities to once or twice a week - no one is saying don't only go out for two nights a week, just don't go drinking every night - you'll find that you don't gain a lot of weight, you feel fresh and healthy and your bank balance won't look worse for wear, either.

London is a fantastic city, but living in it can mean you fall into the trap of regularly eating unhealthy foods and not exercising. By following these tips, however, you can ensure that you do your utmost to stay away from these habits from day one of living in the wonderful city that is London.
