Signing up to one of the many gyms in your local area and attending regularly is something that is strongly advised, no matter whether you've got a few stone to lose or you're simply looking to maintain your current level of weight and increase your fitness levels.
For those new to gyms, however, they can be slightly daunting and the following information should help put your mind at ease, by answering five of the most frequently asked questions about going to the gym.
1. Do I need to be fit to go?
No!
This is a question that is frequently asked and one where most people have completely the wrong answer.
No matter what your thoughts on the topic are, there is absolutely no need to get fit before you go to the gym. Sure, there will be people there who will be fitter and healthier than you, but even after a year or two of going to the gym, there will still be people there who will be fitter and healthier than you.
2. How much is it going to cost me?
Varying massively from gym to gym, the cost of a gym membership will depend not only on the gym itself and its location, but also on what it is that you're wanting to carry out at the gym.
For example, you might be able to sign up to a local boxing gym for 20 pounds a month, where the facilities will be basic but usable, but if you're wanting all of the latest equipment and a personal trainer, you could be looking at upwards of 200 pounds a month.
3. What do I need for my first session?
The most important thing you can have ready for your first session is a willingness to learn and succeed. Some people head to the gym for the first time thinking they know everything and end up causing themselves an injury, but working out isn't a race, so just take your time, listen to what those at the gym tell you and take it all on board bit by bit. It might take you a few weeks to get into your stride, but you will eventually be able to go to the gym and know exactly what you're doing and what's going to work best for you.
4. Is there a good starter exercise?
The best exercises for those new to gyms are generally considered to be the cardiovascular ones, for the simple fact that not only do they give your body an all over workout, but they get you used to the gym environment, something that can only be learnt by spending time there.
5. Do I really need to go to the gym?
This is a question that can only be answered by you, as it is something that relates to individuals, but what you need to ask yourself is whether you honestly feel you could lose weight by yourself at home - it might sound easy to do in theory, but the truth is that not many people are strict enough and knowledgeable enough to be able to exercise regularly outside of the gym environment.
Going to the gym can be a difficult time for plenty of people, but by doing your research, you can ensure that you're as prepared as possible for your time in gyms, wherever you are in the world.
