When you move in with your partner and start living together permanently, you will find that various aspects of your life change. However you may not be aware that cohabitation can also affect your overall weight as well.
There was a study carried out a few years ago by Newcastle University that showed that both men and women often observe changes in their weight when they start living with a partner. They found that women often tend to put on weight whilst men tend to get healthier in general.
So what are the possible explanations for this?
Well let's start with men first of all because I personally think that men become healthier because when they live on their own they do not eat a lot of healthy nutritious food. It can be a real hassle preparing a healthy meal at the end of the day, and it tends to be particularly hard for men because it is often so much easier to get a takeaway or put something in the microwave.
A lot of men in the western world also enjoy going out their mates a lot when they are single. This usually means that they end up consuming lots of alcohol, which is obviously very unhealthy.
However when they start living with a partner they tend to drink less and start eating healthier meals. Many women do not enjoy eating a lot of junk food, so it is easy to see why men start becoming healthier after cohabitation.
For women it is also easy to see why they might put on weight. Despite often influencing their partner to eat healthier food, it is often the case that women will start eating bigger portions because larger meals tend to be prepared, which then need to be split between the two of them.
It is also the case that women start to eat a lot more meat, due to the male influence, so this would also explain the subsequent weight gain. Plus you have to bear in mind that women often do not eat that much when they are living on their own because they will be preparing their own meals and will want to stay slim. However this can change when they start living with a partner.
So the point is that I think there are logical reasons behind these findings. When you think about it, it is quite easy to see why men often get healthier and women get slightly fatter when they start living with each other.
