It's no big secret; recent statistics tell us in no uncertain terms that we are hurtling head first towards becoming a nation that is predominantly overweight. More worryingly this is not something that has just been noticed; apparently the figures, that did not exist 50 years ago have been growing steadily ever since.
When somebody as austere as the World Health Organisation predicts that by the year 2015 there will be a mind blowing 2.3 billion overweight adults in the world, then it really is time to sit up and pay attention. There are a few obvious reasons why this is happening, like the increase in convenience foods and the influx of labour saving devices that are available today.
Because of the number of people who live in the capital, you can bet your bottom dollar that every gym in London has a larger percentage of people trying desperately to shift those excess pounds than a gym in a small town. This does not however detract from the fact that the problem is nationwide.
In response to the problem, there are a few things that you can do if you consider yourself to be in this category. By making a few simple adjustments to your general lifestyle, you can greatly reduce the chances of being included under this unwanted banner.
Being overweight basically means that the amount of food that you are taking on board is more than your body needs to fulfil its daily maintenance routine. This excess is stored by your body as fat, and hey presto you have put on weight, it's as simple as that.
You can start by reducing the amount that you eat, even if you reduce your intake by about 400 calories a day, could mean that you lose up to 2 pounds a week. This does not sound a lot, but it is better to allow your body time to adjust gently to the changes as it does not like crash diets or anything like that.
If you work it out, at 1 pound a week, that means that you could lose 52 pounds, that is almost 4 stones in a year, and that is brilliant. If you put this together with a little gentle exercise then the results could in all probability be even better.
Exercise is a great way to help weight loss and it does not have to be all out full blooded pumping iron at your local gym in London, there are easier ways. An easy way to start is simply to get off the bus home from work 1 stop before you normally do and walk the difference, this will soon seem like a walk in the park.
Change your eating habits, and try to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables instead of convenience or fast foods, you will be amazed at how much better your body feels. The added bonus is that when your body feels good, this in turn makes you feel good, and if you feel good you will stick to your new lifestyle and be the envy of all of your friends.
It just goes to prove that a few simple changes will go a long way to giving you a healthier lifestyle. For more information about joining a gym in London, visit the Fitness First website at http://www.fitnessfirst.co.uk/gyms-in-london.aspx.
