If like the majority of people, according to recent statistics, you find that you would benefit from a bit of exercise, you are probably thinking of ways that you can avoid going to the gym. Although this is the preferable place to exercise, it is often better to use this as a target to reach, and start with something a little easier.
Many people seem to have the ability to sail through life without ever having to do anything more than their daily routine to keep their fitness at an acceptable level. For the majority however, staying within the boundaries of reasonable fitness is just a little bit more difficult.
That's the bad news; the good news is that you do not have to work yourself into a lather to improve your general fitness. The fact that you have, shall we say, let your exercise regime lapse, would normally point to the fact that you have in turn put on a few pounds in weight.
Just because you are a bit bigger, does not mean that you can't do something about it, you just have to approach the problem from a different angle. The first thing that you need to do, is listen to your body, as it knows what it wants, and moreover when it wants it.
It needs exercise to burn of the energy created by the amount of food that you take in, so the first step would be to take a good look at what you eat and when you eat. It is a good idea to eat breakfast every day, but it is not compulsory to eat specifically at lunchtime and teatime, try eating only when you are hungry, but with sensible sized portions.
An important thing to remember is that your brain needs around 20 minutes before it gets the signal that tells it that you are not hungry anymore. With this in mind, it is always best to stop eating when you are satisfied, and not when you are full.
For exercise, why not try walking, as by taking a brisk walk you will certainly burn off that excess energy and will also be giving your body a good cardio vascular exercise. The main benefit of this is that you can start at your own pace, and gradually increase your effort as you go along.
Climbing the stairs is another good way to get your exercise regime going, and there is always dancing if you are feeling a little more adventurous. The added benefit is that this will give your spirits a boost and make you feel better about yourself.
An important thing to remember is to take on board a plentiful supply of water when you are exercising as the last thing that you want is to become dehydrated. This also helps you to decide if you are actually hungry or simply thirsty, as sometimes the feelings can be confusing. If you are careful and don't go mad with your exercise start out, then you will find the transition to one of today's modern gyms just that little bit easier. When you start a programme here, then you will really see a change in your overall fitness levels.
