Although a health club and a gym are the same in one sense, being that they provide an environment for people to exercise in regularly, helping them to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it is accepted by most that they vary widely in one main way.
This primary difference is generally that although a gym will provide pieces of exercise equipment for people to utilize to help with weight loss and / or maintenance of a healthy lifestyle, a health club provides this and a whole lot more, offering an area where you can take part in an all round health and fitness routine, from traditional gym exercises to very often sports facilities and massage rooms.
Due to this all round service, health clubs are particularly popular. There are numerous health clubs located in most parts of the country and these five points are all recommended things to look for when you're searching for a suitable health club for your needs.
1. Gym facilities - although health clubs aim to provide a greater amount of facilities than your traditional gym, it's important that they have the basics in place and one of the first things you need to look for is the number of different pieces of exercise equipment that they have to offer, in terms of both variety and actual quantity.
2. Extra facilities - every health club will have at least a few extra facilities to a gym, but it's important that you take your time to look into what they are - a swimming pool, sauna room and tennis court might be fantastic compared to the gym you were attending, but it's important to realise that compared to many health clubs, this is only a small number of extra facilities and you can, if you do your research, find health clubs with dozens of extra facilities on offer.
3. Additional services - this is something that is likely to be specific to every health club, but it would be pleasing to know if a health club offered any certain additional services, such as personal trainers, as these types of services can enhance a membership tremendously.
4. Cafe / restaurant - head to a gym and you're likely to find a number of vending machines providing food and drink snacks. If you head to most health clubs, however you can usually find a cafe or restaurant providing a number of health conscious meals.
This may not be something that instantly appeals to you, but it's always worthwhile checking to see if the health club you're looking at has one, as after an intensive work out, it can be pleasing to know that you can grab something to eat, all prepared for you, which is healthy and won't have a negative impact on your fitness and healthy eating plan.
5. Cost - as would be expected, a membership to a health club is very often more costly than a membership to a gym. However, the increased cost is justified in the fact that with your membership, you have access to a wider variety of facilities and services.
The cost of health club memberships can vary quite substantially, though and so it's important that you spend time looking at the various health clubs in your area and the membership packages that they have on offer.
Choosing between a gym and a health club is something that most people can do and it's choosing between the different health clubs that can cause people a lot of headaches, as the differences are greater than most first believe. However, as long as you do your research and understand just what each offers, you should be able to make an informed decision when searching for a suitable health club.
