Taekwondo is a Korean developed martial art that is a conglomerate of multiple fighting techniques. It combines sport, defense and of course combat; in some cases it includes philosophy and meditation as well.
Taekwondo comes from the words tea meaning to break with kick, kwon meaning to break with fist, and do meaning the method. All together you have a word that means the method to efficiently breaking your enemies with either your kick or your fist.
In year 2000 it became an Olympic event organized by the World Taekwondo Federation or W.T.F. for short. When this happened there became diversity between different methods of the martial art.
So another organization the International Taekwondo Federation was organized to keep the Korean methods untainted by the world Olympic rules and regulation. Sport taekwondo emphasizes more speed and precision for sparing, so the I.T.F. set to maintain the traditional martial art that was developed in the 50s for the Korean army.
The ITF was founded in the in 1966 by a man named Choi Hong Hi. He died in 2002 leading to a number of successor disputes.
The philosophies taught with taekwondo include mantras such as "I shall be a champion of justice and truth" and "I will build a better and more peaceful world." The sport teaches self-confidence and control.
