No matter whether you're signing up for large Birmingham gyms or a small gym in the countryside, your first session there - assuming that you've never been to Birmingham gyms before, for example - is likely to be a slightly daunting one.
There's no doubt that it will fill you with excitement as you start to take the steps into a health and fitness lifestyle, but it's also understandable that as with anything new, there's likely to be a little nervousness due to the fact that there's a certain amount of uncertainty as to what you're going to need and be doing.
The most important thing you can do before you start the gym for the first time is to ensure that you're fully prepared and there are a number of points that are worthwhile keeping in mind while doing this.
1. It's always important to have an understanding that you aren't going to be expected to know everything about working out. Some people go to the gym for the first time worried because they feel that they should have carried out hours and hours of research into the different exercises that can be done and the various pieces of equipment that are available, but this will all be explained in your gym induction.
2. It is, however, good practice to look into how to carry out a few basic stretches. Although you're likely to be shown these at the gym, it's a good idea to carry a few of them out in your time leading up to your first gym session to get your muscles used to the regular work out that they're going to be put through.
3. Investing in a good quality pair of trainers and some suitable gym clothing is a great idea and whether or not you normally enjoy spending money on clothes, it's important that you buy a decent pair of trainers, as they need to be comfortable, hard wearing and supportive.
4. Before your first real session, it's advisable to eat a meal full of high energy foods, something like wholemeal pasta and a banana to follow, as these foods are full of energy which will be slowly released into your body throughout your gym session.
5. After you've been at the gym for a while in your first session, you're likely to feel a mixture of tiredness and excitement, with part of you wanting to stop and another part wanting to keep on going.
Rather than giving in to either of these, you need to stop exercising when you're body tells you it's now struggling and although you might think this would be when exercises start to hurt, it's imperative that you stop exercising before they hurt - push your body past what feels comfortable, but not to the point where you're having to go through pain to complete the exercises.
Going to the gym and working out is something that everyone should be doing regularly to keep on top of their weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle and these points explain how you can prepare for your very first session at the gym.
