Skateboarding is a broadly misunderstood sport, usually associated with terms like punk, scofflaw, and even, in some cases, words like suicide(in the sense of: that's what it is). Fact of the matter is skating is for tough self-motivated individuals that have passion for what they do.
Learning to ride a skateboard can be difficult, if you have a high center of balance you should probably start by exercising your legs and thighs by doing lunges or squats, or you could even prepare yourself by picking up jogging in the morning. Whatever it is you start doing, you want to be in pretty good physical condition before you start skating - at least in public anyway.
If you can perform simple maneuvers such as the push and Ollie, chances are you are going to be called a poser, and this can be embarrassing. However, if you are talented skateboarder you will quickly gain respect by anyone who does not work directly for the city (city officials are paid to be prudes about the side walk and are worried that if you fell and got hurt you would try to sue them).
When skating, it is good to practice at the skate park; by honing your ability as a skater here, you will become more confident when you venture out into the city to skate. Gaining confidence is a big deal with skateboarding.
This extreme sport requires movement throughout the entire session, and performing tricks while moving can be a difficult thing. If you are not prepared to confidently land on the board you will fall.
Landing half on the board and half off because of a misplaced confidence will result worse than a complete bail. Bailing is where you forfeit the maneuver midway through; this can lead to wrecks, biffs and even crashes.
Bails are best avoided unless absolutely necessary. By gaining confidence in one thing you gain confidence in many other things as well.
Skating won't just build confidence, it will also build muscles. The constant strain on your legs is a wonderful aerobics exercise; this will burn calories fast and improve your core balance and muscles.
Confidence: check, muscles: check and image: check. That's right, it doesn't matter if you were captain of the chess club or DM in the dungeons and dragons game, by performing this extreme sport many people will associate a hardened character to your presupposed persona.
It doesn't even matter what you are dressed like. Well, if you are dressed in all black like a Goth you will probably receive some ridicule, but if you are dressed in regular to even geeky apparel it will not adversely affect your appearance as long as you are skating.
