The first game that came about, incorporating aerobic exercise, was Dance Dance Revolution, this game revolutionized the way we did gaming and the way we did fitness. The way it is played is by connecting a mat with arrows to your gaming console.
You stand on the mat and step on the arrows in rhythm with the music and video displayed by the television. This is not as graceful as contemporary dance, but it is still a hard cardio work out that will build up a sweat in no time, and you will have fun while you're doing it.
This game is used by people of all ages, and in the games menu there is even cardio option, depending on the version of the game that you buy. I believe there are multiple versions for each console, which is good because that will give you a more diverse playlist of songs to dance to.
The down side to this is you can only dance to the songs that are programed into the game, which in many cases are obscure or redone by pseudo-artist because the gaming company couldn't get the rights from the artist. Regardless of song quality this game is still amazingly fun, and can be played by up to four players, making it great for parties and social gatherings.
The next game on the list is Wii Fit. This game is incredible; the engineers over at Nintendo are genius.
This game comes with a Wii Fit board that is used to measure your balance during game play. They have many different games that you can play that incorporate the motion based controller and the balance based board.
Through these two instruments they monitor your movements, so that they can accurately display the effects on the game. The games included in this are skate, ski, golf, and much more.
Each game is surprisingly strenuous, and throughout they record the amount of calories that you have burned while playing. The coolest part of this game that I found would have to be the yoga portion.
Yoga is broadly known for its wonderful health benefits. Well what's unique about this is when on the balance board it measures your center of balance.
I thought this was amazingly convenient and helpful. I never knew that I could improve my stretches so much just by positioning my weight a bit differently.
The newest one on the market is just dance for the x box Kinect. This one is amazing fun for parties, because, instead of the Dance Dance Revolution style dancing, you actually have to perform real dance moves to acquire points in the game.
