First things first, if you are trying to get the mid-section of your body (your stomach) in shape, or if you are trying to lose weight the most important thing to do is burn calories. That means you have got to start doing some aerobic exercises.
Running is good, it is probably one of the best ways to shape your torso; yoga will also do the trick. Whatever it is that you do, make sure you keep it a consistent part of your daily lifestyle.
Here is a hard truth for some of you, fitness is a lifestyle, that's right, and you have to work for it. Don't worry though, once you get in the habit of being healthy you will find a peace and joy that was once just an empty void in your life.
Once you have figured your aerobics routine, to further trim the love handles you can start doing some more dynamic exercises that are designed to specifically target obliques. There is the leg flutter, trunk twist and the crunch twist.
These work outs will start telling your obliques that you need them to be stronger; so they will start burning extra calories around them looking for proteins. If you are just trying to lose weight I would suggest not eating a lot of protein and instead eating complex carbohydrates.
This is the healthiest way to get the energy you need to burn calories. Protein will give you energy but will be converted into muscle mass, and carbohydrates like wheat bread and whole grains will give you sustaining energy but will not add any volume to your body.
When losing weight it is good to get all the nutrition you need, but to work harder to burn the fat rather than just starving yourself. The latter will cause you to be malnourished and will increase your chance of weight rebound.
Start your love handle wrecking work outs with the leg flutters. Lay your body down belly on the ground and lift your legs off the floor, swing them up and down like you are under water.
You do not have to swing them very far, in fact, the closer you keep them to the ground, without touching it, the more intense of a workout it becomes. This work out will shape everything from your legs, buns, thighs, and obliques.
Next is the standing trunk twist, this is kind of like a karate move. Stand with your arms to your side and your legs spread at shoulder length apart.
Now twist your torso and swing your arm outward like you are trying to hit an invisible enemy. Do this repeatedly on both sides of your body.
