Exactly how many fatalities there are from free running annually is unknown, because it is often these are misinterpreted as suicides. It is an extremely dynamic sport that is part art and part ego.
It is for the thrill seekers that want to push their limits as far as possible. There are a few different aspects of free running.
First of there is the dropping part; where people will jump off of large building with no safety equipment, and solely use their ability to roll to absorb the impact and escape what could be a fatal drop for some people. This sport is definitely not for the light hearted.
Some of the more skilled free runners will drop distances of more than twenty feet, which at that height is very easy to break bones from if you are not careful. Start by jumping of small things like your house or your neighbor's house, doing this will prepare you for larger drops.
You must perfect your roll if you are going to be jumping of things of great height. The roll is the part that will save your life when you perform your death defying stunts.
Many people now like to incorporate tricking into the drops. Which takes it to a whole new level of control, they call this Parkour.
Original free running didn't focus on the tricks as much as the massive drops and quick escapes through metropolitan areas. When Casino Royale came out in theaters is when the sport started to get real public attention.
Since then many different armies have started training their soldiers in the art of Parkour. It is even slowly being implemented into the United States Marine Corps.
As Free running is still slightly in its infancy there is a lot of possibility for change. Now many people are starting to call it Parkour.
And there are many different organizations popping up nationwide promoting and teaching the techniques of Parkour. My guess is this will be the sport of the future, as big cities grow so will the sport.
People are always going to want their thrills and this is one of the most adrenaline pumping, excitement buzzing, ecstasy inflating extreme sports there are. Because it takes no equipment, anyone can start performing it on their own time anywhere.
This sport just takes motivation to get up and do something crazy, which a lot of kids these days are starting to have. Well the ones that aren't glued to the TV any way.
The beauty and grace of free running is mixed with chaos and pure adrenalin of death defying actions. This makes the sport a very appealing and modern activity.
