Fast Food: everyone eats it, everyone loves it, and everyone knows it is bad for you. But there are times where you need a quick meal that's inexpensive that you can eat in the car.
However, you are trying to be healthy and you can't decide if you'd be better off going hungry or eating that cheeseburger. But don't worry- there's a solution!
While fast food is unhealthy by definition, there are still ways you can make smart choices at the drive thru. With these tips you can decrease the damage, or even have a perfectly healthy meal.
First up is the cheeseburger, a tasty all-American meal. But it is so bad for you!
However, there are a few small adjustments you can make to decrease your calorie intake and not sacrifice taste. The first choice is to remove the top bun; doing this cuts the carbs in half!
Another option is to cut out the sauce. Ketchup has a lot of sugar in it, and most other sauces contain large amounts of fat and calories.
One more thing you can do is add lettuce. It doesn't detract from the flavor (because it is so bland), and it adds a nice crunch to the sandwich.
Lettuce helps with the digestive process so that you don't get as much heartburn later! It also helps it to pass smoothly and quickly through your system so you don't get indigestion or any other unpleasant side effects that fast food may have on you.
Up next are french fries. These tasty sides are menacing because they are so deceptive; they are a "vegetable", but they are fried and don't have any nutritional value.
What is a person supposed to do? One recommendation is to simply replace it with something else.
Many fast food places offer healthier substitutes like a side salad or fruit cups. However, if you can't take it anymore and you desperately need some french fries, just order the smallest serving available (these are usually only $1), and order a small side salad to go with it.
This way you can satisfy you craving, and provide your body with an extra boost of lettuce to make sure things go through smoothly. You can now eat French Fries in a healthful way!
Chicken sandwiches are another deceptive food. Chicken it a white meat, so you feel like you're making a healthier choice.
However if it's breaded, you're still piling on the carbs and calories. Instead, order a grilled chicken sandwich and have them use light mayo (or none at all), and keep that lettuce on there!
Again, toss the top bun. These little choices really add up!
Last, but certainly not least, are the famous "drive thru salads", particularly from Wendy's. Because it's a salad you feel secure in your "healthy choice", but these misleading meals are the real culprits.
While the lettuce is a good choice, it's usually the only redeeming quality. If you want to have a healthy salad, get one with grilled chicken instead of breaded, skip the croutons, and get a fat-free dressing.
Now you have a tasty and healthy meal. Congrats!
All of these small choices can have a big impact, especially if you regularly eat out.
