In a break from the traditional under 10 format and in line with new "Go Games" regulations, the host club have opened the competition to all juvenile football teams at under 12 level, in the local and surrounding area.
With underage teams expected from as far away as County Derry, Donegal and Dublin, this highly regarded tournament offers a unique opportunity for boys/girls, of varying ability, to participate and compete in one of Ulster's most esteemed underage competitions. As always, entrants to this hugely successful event will compete for the prestigious John Mitchel Shield, as well as the Patrick McAleavey Plate.

The stars of tomorrow will descend on Derryleckagh playing fields from 9.30am and competing teams can expect a warm welcome form the Newry Mitchels club members. Following a short registration period, the opening round of games are expected to get underway at approximately 10.00am. Played over eight pitches at the Derryleckagh playing fields complex, teams will compete in a group league format, followed by a knock out completion. Teams will compete on an eleven a side basis over a twenty minute period (ten minutes each half). Games will be administered by official County Board referees and full rules for the under 12 code will be implemented.
Club Chairman Dara McCoy looks forward to welcoming all visiting clubs to the Newry Mitchels GAC forthcoming Under 12 Blitz, "The Newry Mitchels annual underage blitz gives young people from different backgrounds the chance to compete at an intercounty level with children of a similar age and provides a unique and rewarding experience for both the competitors and the organisers". The Newry Mitchels GAC Under 10 blitz has been a mainstay in the County Down GAA calendar since its inception twenty-five years ago.
The tournament has played host to club teams such as the mighty Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh), Lavey (Derry), St. Brigids (Antrim) and St. Peregrines (Dublin) to name but a few. Players such as County Down Captain, Ambrose Rodgers, Mark Poland, Ronan Murtagh and Jamie Clarke have all participated in Newry Mitchels annual blitz, and as such its standing as one of the most prestigious underage tournaments in Ulster is unquestionable.
With around 40 teams expected to enter this prestigious and hugely successful tournament, the Newry Mitchels club can be rightly proud of their contribution to advancing the aims of the GAA for our young people.
