"I wanted to look like a man that had been deprived of sleep for a year" Bale told his director. If you have seen the movie the machinist, then you would certainly agree that he did accomplish his goal.
Director Brad Anderson said, "I never intended him to loose so much weight, I didn't ask him to either." This critically acclaimed actor apparently did it of his own volition.
How did he manage to lose so much weight, and to look like a suffering insomniac? The answer is easy and anyone can do it.
He went to a diet composed of mostly coffee and cigarettes along with one apple and one can of tuna a day. He would sometimes supplement the tuna with an egg.
Is this healthy? Well ask yourself if mister bale looked at all healthy in the movie... he certainly did not look at all healthy.
When he started his diet he was close to 187 pounds being at the height of 6'2" this is a pretty healthy BMI. When he dropped down to 120 so easily he was tempted to try to lose an additional 20 pounds.
It is a good thing he didn't because that probably would have branded his diet into the anorexic category. Along with one apple and one can of tune each day, he also gave up all exercise.
Avoiding exercise would allow his body to take calories from muscle and deplete the muscle mass he had. The two main things to avoid with this diet are food and exercise.
Basically do not eat anything and do not exercise at all. Just read the script and memorize your lines.
Bale said, "I wouldn't have lost so much weight if I didn't think the movie was worth seeing." So when trying to shed an obscene amount of weight, make sure it is for a very good reason like a hit movie.
Visiting your physician is a good idea with such drastic diets. At the beginning of the diet Bale visited his doctor, who told him what kind of things his body would loose and what type of multi-vitamins he should take to keep proper nutrition.
After that Bale states that he was his own guide, judging his weight loss by feeling: "as long as I feel ok, I will continue with the fat loss." All though for people that are not gifted with wonderful genetics like Bale keeping in touch with a physician is a good idea.
After the movie people warned Bale to start eating slow, with lean meats and healthy foods. His friends watched in horror as he ate donuts.
Will the Christian Bale diet work for everybody? No, absolutely not.
This is a terribly unhealthy diet that is good for only one thing: losing weight. But if you have the discipline, self-control and the desire go ahead and try it.
