Karate is a good way for you to keep yourself protected in case of the unfortunate event of mugging or robbing or being attacked. There are many different styles and forms of karate that all have different philosophies and techniques associated with them.
Finding the right kind of karate or form of ju-jitsu is important. It is like when a jockey chooses a horse, or when a horse's owner chooses a jockey.
It is important that the martial art matches the individual. It is going to take some time learning and developing skills and maneuvers effective for combat, so you want to be sure to find some form of fighting that you are comfortable with.
For women there is crane kung-fu. This style of fighting is very defensive and isn't really meant to be used to hurt people unless they are trying to hurt you.
The philosophy associated with this fighting technique is let the attacker hurt themselves. This is done by quick counter attacks while your attacker swings and moves to attack you.
Because most people are not trained in martial arts, when an inexperienced fighter tries to attack you he will likely have very poor balance. With crane kung-fu you will learn to take advantage of this, with each strike your attacker delivers you will reflect the damage inward by targeting pressure points and playing off their unbalanced maneuvers.
Unfortunately this martial art is not meant to kill anybody. Forms of kung-fu like the dragon and leopard focus on making quick ends to the enemy, whether it be by death or otherwise.
The dragon techniques teach you to be powerful and confident. This kung-fu is more for bigger men who may be stronger but maybe not quite as fast.
The dragon technique teaches power. When fighting you learn to punch through your enemies; and when you hit specific weak spots and pressure points you can actually cause internal bleeding, hemorrhaging or even death.
The leopard technique is a powerful style used for smaller people. It makes use of wit and speed to defeat enemies.
Each position in leopard fighting is pre-practiced with a various amount of attacks associated with it. Stance is based on a triangular design that keeps the attacker at a specific point.
Whenever a step is taken it is at a ninety degree angle keeping the attacker on a fixed point in the imaginary triangle. This helps the martial artist to predict movements from their attackers.
There are a variety of technical hand formations taught in this kung-fu style that are designed to bring enemies down with very little force. Once you have these practiced and can hit pressure points fast you will have no trouble making short use of any unsuspecting attackers.
