Stretching-a Means To An End

Stretching is a very great way to keep your muscles toned and in shape. It increases and promotes relaxation and blissful brain functioning.

It helps to prevent joint problems and alignment problems as we age. Basically stretching is a cure all exercise for everyday life.

But is it possible to stretch too much? -- Actually, yes.

If you are not properly aware of stretching techniques and methods you may end up damaging your own body. Stretching is best when used as a means to an end.

If you want to be able to maneuver around the office without any strain on the muscles you are going to need a different level of flexibility then that of a gymnast. There are many people who get obsessed with stretching, and only stretch to stretch further.

This can be bad because tendons and ligaments do not have any pain receptors. It is possible to stretch them until they rip and you wouldn't know that you have done something terrible to yourself until it was too late.

So find a good reason to stretch. Many people simply want to stretch for fitness sake.

Joining a yoga class is the best option for these people. That way an instructor can walk them through there stretches step by step, thus preventing any sort of problems or blunders.

When stretching you need to make sure your muscles are relaxed; what happens if you are stretching a flexed muscle is you are actually putting pressure on the tendons holding it to the bone. It is possible to tear a muscle right of your bone; if you did that you would be in some pretty bad trouble so try to avoid it.

Generally most people will perform either static stretches or dynamic stretches. Static stretches are much more intense, but usually not necessary.

To perform a static stretch pull your muscles to a point of tension and hold it for at least thirty seconds. Thirty seconds is the minimum amount of time where benefits are still received, and two minutes is the longest amount of time.

If you can hold the position for more than two minutes you should probably try doing a different stretch, as that one is likely to be ineffective. Dynamic stretches are stretches that benefit performance in sports and other activities.

They are stretches that train and stretch your muscle with specific and practiced movements. For example a martial artist will do leg kicks to stretch his thighs and hamstrings, where a gymnast will do back bends to stretch their body.

These are done for specific purpose. Training the body to move correctly and easily through specific motions will make it easier to perform specific tasks.
