Life can be stressful: wake up and brush teeth, follow busy traffic to work, try not to think of piling debts while working, follow traffic back home, repeat tomorrow. Routine in daily life helps us to be stable, but it can also get us feeling exhausted.
By clearing your mind daily you will have lower stress levels and will be more able to focus your mind. To do this you can start by meditating.
There are many different types and forms of meditation, and consequently many different ways to practice it. Basically they all hold true to two aspects: relaxation and focus.
To start meditating, find a quiet and comfortable spot, sit with your legs crossed and your hands laid over your feet. Be sure that you are comfortable; if you need a cushion to sit on get one.
The idea is to forget about your body and the world around you, to lose all the stress and anxiety that routine life builds, and to focus your thoughts and achieve a peaceful state of mind. Once you have gotten comfortable start breathing in and out through your nose.
Breathing should be slow and controlled, spend as much time exhaling as you do inhaling, doing this will slow your heart rate and lower you into a more relaxed and meditative state. Try to focus on your breathing, think about how your lungs feel with every breath of air.
This will help distract you from the cluttered thoughts that may be creeping into your mind. Learning to clear your mind is easier said than done. Try to not think about anything at all; try to stop that little voice in your head from rambling. This will take a lot of practice, so do not get frustrated if you do not do this first try.
After you have cleared your mind, and the canvas of your thoughts are clean, begin focusing on the now. This will take some practice too.
Most of us spend our time thinking about the future: about what we are "going" to do and how we are "going" to do it. A lot of us spend our time thinking about the past: remembering good times, or in some cases dwelling on bad times.
With meditation you want to focus on the exact moment you are in. Feel the breeze touch your skin, hear the rustling of leaves, smell the earth beneath your feet, taste the freshness of the wind.
Focus on all your immediate sensations, do not put your thoughts into words, and just focus on experiencing the now. With time you will become better at lowering your consciousness into a meditative state.
