Doing Exercise, Healthier And Happier

Read 85 times since Friday, September 02, 2011

Exercise can be grueling, tiresome, tedious, unpleasant, taxing, demanding, strenuous work; but every time you do it, it gets easier to do it again. Not only will exercise make you a stronger person, but studies have shown that regular exercise also makes people happy.

This is not a subjective remark either; although if we were counting opinions we would probably have a lot of people blatantly say they are happier because they exercise. You see, rigorous exertion of muscle and cardio strength stimulates serotonin.

Serotonin is the chemical in the brain that is responsible for making you feel happy and pleasant. There are a few ways to get this: you can eat food, certain situations, and exercise.

Every time you eat your body is thanking you for the nutrients and your brain secretes that beloved serotonin; and during certain situations, particularly with loved ones during times of affection, our brains will discharge some of the lovely chemical. However, you can also get serotonin or the effects of serotonin by smoking and drinking; though when you do this you are actually inhibiting your body's natural ability to create the necessary substance.

The magical thing about exercising is you actually start producing more serotonin. Not only is it sent to your neural-receptors, but it actually strengthens and increases the manufacturers of the serotonin.

This isn't just going to make you happy for a fleeting moment; you are going to be happier from that point on and forever. Many cases of depression stem from lethargy and sluggishness.

A good way to fight depression is to start exercising. Depression is one of the biggest problems in America, right next to obesity, and go figure lethargy, obesity, and depression: they all go hand in hand.

A good exercise for a good chemical rush is jogging. If you have ever heard of the runner's wall, then you will know there is a point where the runner suddenly gets a second wind, a rush of energy that can sometimes double or triple their running distance.

What happens here is your body is saying, "This is work, but the muscles are adequately trained to perform, so I will just help you out by making you feel good." The wall is usually associated with head rushes, tingles, and euphoria.

The drug ecstasy (methylenedioxmethamphetamine or mdma) does something similar; it pushes all the serotonin buildup out at one time. Although, when you do this, your body isn't trained to reproduce the chemical.

Another side effect from this drug is that it burns the brain. The over activity is like throwing your brain in a blender and then placing the blended bits in a microwave.

Or maybe more like: the rush of all the serotonin overwhelms neuron receptors, and kills many brain cells. Both of these examples are a good description of how drugs affect your brain.
