In Chinese culture Tai Chi was developed as a study of internal energy, with the philosophy of yin yang, meaning equivalence and balance. The martial art was started as an art for healing one's self and for harming one's enemies.
They practice flow; this can be likened to water, which is the softest and most powerful substance on the planet. Once you have your whole body working in flow your internal energy will be greatly focused and enhanced when turned into outward practice.

For people of the Chinese culture this is almost a meditative exercise, although many people in other areas of the world have started performing Tai Chi for its health benefits purposes. Chinese believe there is chi in everything.
The saying goes, "one can live long without food, not as long without water, and not for two seconds without chi." In china you will actually see people practicing the art early in the morning at parks.
Tai Chi derived from Tajiiquan, which is interpreted as "ultimate fist" or just "ultimate". It was created as the perfect union of yin and yang, soft and power, internal and external energy.
When we learn to use the soft or internal power we learn how to maximize the external power that is exerted through our movements. This training consists of five different elements: Nei gung, tui shou; which are response drills, sanshou; the self-defense techniques, weapons and solo hand routines; known simply as forms.
All the movements and positions in Tai Chi are named after different animals and aspects of nature. There are nearly a hundred different routines, requiring full range of motion and some amount of flexibility.
This martial art is for everyone, the young and the old. There are different forms of Tai Chi that all focus on the same movements, but some with different emphasis than others.
Whether you are training to protect yourself in battle or in life, this martial art will benefit you. It will promote peace of mind and relaxation, which are two things that are widely forgotten now days, especially in the Americas.
Perhaps that is why oriental cultures are so often associated with wisdom, because they practice martial arts like this that calm their minds-- I guess it makes sense. I would recommend everyone practice Tai Chi, if not for the health benefits for the spiritual benefits that one receives.
