Have you eaten bread, drank juice, had a candy bar? Well I hate to burst your bubble, but you have eaten bugs and throughout your life time I would say probably a fair amount.
These pests get into everything. The rotten, bug infested apples in orchards, yeah guess what, they are used to make juice.
So if by some astounding miracle you haven't eating bugs ground into your bread, you have certainly drank essence of bug in your juices, especially if you go for the natural stuff. Don't be alarmed it isn't like these are going to kill you.
Must bugs are safe to eat, and truth is they are a good source of protein, so really they are doing you more good than bad. Although, yes the idea of eating bugs does sound a bit unappealing, if I am being honest.
So to make this easier on everyone, I have compiled my favorite bug inspired/required recipes. First one, that I know everyone will love, chocolate covered crickets.
Mmm... doesn't that sound delicious? You actually smother these little critters in chocolate while they are still alive to make your snack a bit more exciting.
Just let these chocolate covered confectionaries jump around the table during dinner time. It is a fun way to get excited about a healthy little appetizers or desert.
Crickets are actually a good flour substitute, so for those of you who are hyper glycemic, guess what you get to eat bugs. Here is what your do.
Collect the crickets and toss them in the oven. Let them back for a good one to three hours at about 200 degrees.
Once you have done that, take the toasted bugs and put them in your blender or coffee grinder. They should be fairly brittle and breaking about should come easy.
Once you have ground them into a fine powder you can add them to just about anything. Thicken soup with your cricket extract, use ground cricket essence as a binder in your cookies, or just sprinkle it over a nice salad.
You would be surprised at how well crickets and salads go together. With the proper wine, this meal can become a delicacy and an interesting date.
Yes preparing crickets is a little time consuming: you have to account all the time you spend outside catching the crickets and all the time actual preparation takes. But these delectable treats are definitely worth it.
When baked they have a crunchy layer with a nice warm center, kind of like a cream filled donut except it's not as bad for your health, and not as big or soft...much crunchier on the outside. You can also try making cricket tacos, shakes, and ice cream. Destry Masterson is a health and nutrition expert.
