Pizza has got to be the number one favorite food of Americans. Who can refuse the yummy crust with luscious sauce and tasty cheese, pepperoni and toppings?
Every party and get together for young people is not complete without the delicious pepperoni pizza that everyone loves. The only ones that avoid it are the lactose intolerant or staunch religious vegans.
Everybody else clamors for a piece and eats with relish and delight. It's guaranteed to make everyone happy they are there.
However, there is a down side to this wonderful concoction. For one thing, it is a very expensive meal costing anywhere from $6-25 for a pizza.
You think you are getting your money's worth, because it looks so big and round, covering a lot of surface space. But, it's a flat illusion that can break your piggy bank over time.
The other problem is that if you love it too much and have too much of it too many days in one week, you could end up with a serious case of irritable bowel syndrome.
Pizza is a very low fiber choice even if you get the kind with chopped vegetables. The vegetables are not enough to counteract the constipating factors of the white bread, cheese, and pepperoni.
You could be doubled over in abdominal pain in a week's time. You may end up paying to see a doctor to try to figure out what the heck happened and why you feel so awful.
Another problem is that dairy products contribute towards sinusitis and having pizza more that two times in a week could give you a bad case of sinus congestion. Your eyes, head, nose, throat, and lungs could be so congested that you may also end up with bronchitis or pneumonia.
But, oh the awesomeness of that delicious pizza. You may have to weigh your options and figure out which will influence your choices the most; to continue on eating something you love so much or to stay well and not suffer.
There are other problems that can also come into the picture if eating a lot of pizza is your lifestyle. There are flus, arthritis, heart disease, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, gluten sensitivity, and adrenal stress that you can eventually have to deal with.
You may even end up with the cheese-head syndrome and experience mental problems like depression, anxiety, and irritability. Wisconsin is the cheese capital of America, the children in a lot of the schools there have a lot of behavioral problems and trouble concentrating on their work.
So, how do you have your cake and eat it too? How do you find a way to enjoy pizza without losing it?
Well, just try to cut back to one to two slices a week. Or, find a pizza with a whole wheat crust, no cheese, lots of sauce, and lots of vegetables and pineapple.
Then, learn to really enjoy it when you do have it. Maybe you could avoid the pizza buying altogether and save some money to pay off your debts or just have some at your next party.
There are a lot of other delicious food choices that you can distract yourself with and help yourself in order to forget about the temptation. Or, you can experiment to find your limit.
Listen to your body. The next time you get sick and in pain, think back and see if you can figure out what you did to yourself in the last couple of days or week.
Overtime, you will learn what you can and can't handle and just how much of the good stuff and the good life you can handle. You may decide that you want to feel healthy, energized, and alert instead, but that's up to you. Destry Masterson is a health and nutrition expert.
