Alternative Options In Pain Management

Read 52 times since Wednesday, September 14, 2011

There was a time when chronic pain treatment meant only two things. The first is having to take pain medication to make the pain go away or at least make it tolerable. If the pain recurs or continues to persist, then pain medication has to be taken all over again. The second is to undergo surgery. Removing or remedying the cause of the pain is always a logical option. However, surgery does not always guarantee that the pain will not return. Also, a vast majority of people and pain management doctors view surgery as a last resort because of post operative pain and possible complications.

Today, chronic pain management includes a myriad of options. People have finally learned to talk about pain. Chronic pain is seen now as a disease than a mere symptom. As a result, people are finding and discovering even more effective and safer ways of treating or managing chronic pain. Among these alternative remedies are regular exercise, biofeedback and relaxation techniques.

Chronic pain treatment is not just about getting rid of the pain. It also involves treating its underlying causes as well as identifying its contributing factors. It is important for a patient to tell his pain management specialist about changes in his life brought about by chronic pain because these changes will have to be addressed not only in order to treat the pain but to heal the person as well.

Most pain management doctors nowadays prefer to take a holistic standpoint. Pain does not only affect the physical aspect of a person but it does as much damage to his mental or psychological aspect as well. This means that taking pain medication would have to be complemented with a healthy diet, an exercise regime and other techniques that contribute to the well-being of a person. Pain management specialists should also get the family of the patient involved. Most of the time, family members who want to help end up suggesting or doing things that would cause more harm than good to the patient.

It is also important to discuss with patients suffering from chronic pain that proper pain management is the key to living a fruitful and quality life and that the brain plays a crucial part in controlling and managing pain. That is why alternative treatments which prompt the brain to reduce the sensation of pain are considered vital in modern pain management. These methods include biofeedback which enables the patient to monitor certain body functions such as stress, breathing and other processes which affect the perception of pain. These processes are displayed on a monitor and patients are made to learn how to monitor these bodily functions. By being in sync with his processes and emotions, a person will be able to learn how to control anxiety, stress and other factors that cause pain. He will also learn how to use relaxation techniques effectively by actually seeing how they work in reducing pain. Other noteworthy alternative treatments are acupuncture, deep-tissue massages, yoga, music therapy and other activities which promote relaxation.
