For many people taking the first steps into a gym can be a strange experience, they have made the effort and now the time has come to actually do it. They suddenly realise that although they have done what they said they would and joined a gym, the bottom line is, they have not got a clue about what they should actually do.
Whether you have joined a big national gym in London or just your local fitness centre it will all be a waste of time and money if you don't plan ahead. When you join the gym of your choice, you are normally given a comprehensive induction by a member of staff. This will take the form of a basic talk on rules and regulations and the like and also a demonstration of how to use every piece of exercise equipment there. Apart from anything else, this is done to try to make sure that you operate them as safely and productively as possible. Exercise itself is a natural way to keep your body running smoothly, but it does unfortunately bring with it the risk of injury if not done properly. By following a few simple rules, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of becoming a gym casualty.
The first is a matter of common sense; if you have been a little bit inactive for a while and you have gained the odd pound or two, it would be a good idea to consult your doctor and explain what you are going to do. If you get the thumbs up then away you go.
Just because you have the ok from the doc, that doesn't mean that you can barrel head first into the exercise routine that you have had in your head. Your body will make you pay if you try and over work it after a lengthy time of abstinence from exercise. With this in mind, spending the first 5 or 10 minutes warming up with some gentle exercise will help your body to prepare for the vigours that you are going to put it through, If you are male and you have developed something of a beer belly, or a female simply trying to get your figure back after the kids, this will be a great way to start.
Now that you are nicely loosened up, the real exercising can begin, and again a little care should be taken when deciding which ones to do. The choice here is your own, but you need to bear in mind that your body will not be able to take a full blown attack during your first session, so gently does it.
A very important point to remember is fluid intake, especially as you will be working yourself a lot harder than you will have for a while. Your body needs fluids and it is a good idea to drink a pint of water before you start then regularly during your exercises, and then another pint when you are finished to ward off the chance of becoming dehydrated.
If you are getting into the swing of it, whether you are in a gym in London or at your local health club, the answer is to take your time. Don't try and do too much too soon as the last thing that you want to do is over exert yourself, and make yourself ill.
Try and vary your exercises in order to work all of your body, but most of all simply enjoy the feeling that you will get when you are doing your cooling down after a good workout.
