If recent statistics are anything to go by, Birmingham gyms must be just like the ghost towns that you used to see in those old westerns. They state that a very scary two thirds of the population of that city are overweight, with half of that figure being classed as clinically obese.
To put this into perspective, it means that out of an estimated population of 1,071,228 people, 714152 of them are overweight, with 357076 of them, being clinically obese. These figures do not make very good reading by any standards. There were only1350 people actually surveyed, but in that small number the levels of high blood pressure and high body fat were found to be worryingly high. Is this simply because of the area that these people live in, or are there more underlying problems.
Before all of the Birmingham gyms put the closing down signs up, it is worth noting that it is not just their city that is causing concern. The general level of obesity seems to be a cause for concern all across the country, and it seems that the nation is struggling to deal with the problem. For some people there may be a medical problem that makes them gain weight, but for the rest it must just come down to over eating. For the people who are included in this group, there is no need to panic as there is help at hand, but it is going to mean that they have to change a few things in their lives.
The main one obviously involves the amount and type of food that they eat as this is obviously a big part of the problem. The second part is more than likely that fact that they don't do very much in the way of exercise. If they can take this on board there is nothing to stop them drastically reducing not only these numbers, but also more importantly their waistline. Exercise can be a major factor in any attempt to lose weight, as, if you try and do it by dieting alone, it may well take longer, and this in turn can lead to people losing the impetus. The other obvious advantage is that exercise and diet together is a better way to help your body to adjust to the huge changes that it is going through.
Your body is a fine instrument that needs certain things in certain amounts to fulfil its normal daily functions. The food that you eat gives it the necessary energy to carry out this process, but any excess that it does not need is turned to fat. If you exercise, your body will use more of your normal intake, and you should as a result lose weight.
Getting the mix of exercise and healthy eating just right is the best way to help your body to help you, and obviously the more exercise that you do the better that you will feel. This in turn will mean that you are winning your very own battle of the bulge which will make the statistics look a little dated.
