In the beginning of time people would secure food by either hunting and gathering or through agricultural prospects. Now things are pretty different, and most of the food people eat comes from the food industry.
Food industry definitely makes for a more convenient life, but at the cost of some independence. If there were some sort of catastrophic event, like the one expected early 2012, very few people would be able to manage on their own.
Some people have invested in food storage, which is a good idea. So once the major cities of the world are all destroyed with atomic bombs and the states become a lawless wasteland, those of us who have food storage will be able to comfortably eat while we try to adapt.
Sure even after a huge catastrophe like major tectonic movement, a super volcano or whatever it may be people will still be trying to pursue business. Though I can't see that lasting long, because of the ravenous hunger that will take hold of many citizens.
These starving people will probably search the roads and set up some make-shift blockades to stop and rob grocery delivery trucks. Most likely, people will divide off into tribes and create their own laws after the government infrastructure has collapsed.
So that will be a good reason to have some back up food storage. I imagine guns and ammunition will be valuable assets too, either for bartering with semi-rational people or for hunting and protecting your food storage.
When the time comes that people start eating for survival again, it will be a lot more about sustenance rather than for pleasure like it is now. The purpose of eating is to gain fats, proteins, vitamins or minerals to help maintain life or stimulate growth.
This will become a much greater concern for hungry families, when the world is riddled to the core and perforated with bombs and bullet holes. I think for the most part the time of voracious hunger will be fairly short, perhaps a decade, no more than a generation for sure though.
During which time people will start to learn to farm and cultivate the land scape again, but they will have to wait some time for the radioactive depress to clear from the soils. Hence, the ten year period I predict.
Also many people are going to be thrown into a craze from drastic change of life. It won't be till a younger generation realizes they don't want to spend their life in a hungry animistic craze, that people start to become self-dependent and cooperative.
The best thing we can do to prepare for such events is invest in some healthy food storage. Canned foods last a particularly long time. Destry Masterson is a health and nutrition expert. She publishes articles for http://www.foodstoragereviews.com and recommends them for food storage.
