The Gap O' The North Walking Club blends history, heritage and hill walking in a unique mix which has proven to be very popular, so much so that the group has had to split into two sections to accommodate all its members whilst complying with proper hill walking practices.
The walks centre around the beautiful scenic hills of South Armagh and Cooley which are seeped in history and folklore. The club is open to all, and it is hoped that if local people show an interest and wish to get out and about in their own surroundings for a walk with neighbours and friends, then tourists will also want to participate in the organised walks also. It is also hoped that the venture will lead to more and more visitors coming to the area to experience and learn about the beautiful and rich landscape that lies on the periphery of Newry.
The group are working closely with Newry and Mourne District Council and other such agencies with the hope of developing a series of themed ridge top routes with a trail around the Ring of Gullion. The Club are also working in conjunction with local farmers and other people who have an interest in the area to ensure that everyone can maximise on the real development potential and tourism possibilities that may be available. It is hoped that once this development process has been completed that the club can accommodate even more members and can provide greater services and resources.
So far, the club have organised 11 successful walks which have all proven to be very popular. The walks have mainly centred around the Ring of Gullion which is a walkers paradise with its rugged hills which encircle the Slieve Gullion Mountain. Its unique formation has attracted geologists from all over the world and during the walks several points of historical and archaeological interest are highlighted to the group. It is interesting to note however that upon doing some research into the area, the club have discovered that there are more that 100 points of interest within a radius of a few miles from their base in Jonesborough.
Many local people are obviously aware of the existence of this area of beauty however few are aware of the history and heritage of the lands. The group aim to educate people about the fascinating history of the local area whilst partaking in a hobby which they enjoy. The area provides a beautiful backdrop for a leisurely stroll with friends or a more organised outing, which the club can provide. It is hoped that the development of the area will lead to greater opportunities for many local people.
