There comes a time when you reach the point in your life where you decide that enough is enough and you really are going to do something about being overweight or out of shape. This in itself is great, but actually putting your money where your mouth is can be a whole new ball game.
One of the biggest concerns overweight people have is that they think that they will stand out like a sore thumb the minute that they enter the gym. There will no doubt be those who have joined the very best London gym, only to find that when it actually comes to going for a workout, they will use any excuse under the sun to put it off.
The main reason that you worry that you will look a little silly is because you are doing something that is well outside of your normal comfort zone. The main thing to remember is that everybody at that London gym had to go there and walk in a first time and in that respect you are no different. The anxiety that you feel is just your minds way of emotionally blackmailing you into staying as you are.
It is a natural reaction when you try anything new to presume that everyone else there will be looking at you, but the odds are that they won't be. You imagine that everyone is looking at you and that every move that you make is under close scrutiny by them which of course it isn't.
You have to remember that everyone who is at the gym is there for a reason, whether it is to help them to lose some weight or simply to keep themselves fit. Just because you walk in, doesn't mean that they are going to stop what they are doing to turn and look at you just because you are bigger than them.
Gyms all across the country are filled with people who look like they need exercise like an eskimo needs ice cubes, but they exercise because they want to and they enjoy it. This is the zone that you have to get into, the sooner that you can get passed the whole embarrassed thing, the better you will feel and the more you will enjoy what you are doing.
If you need a metaphorical comfort blanket, then simply take along your mp3 player or I pod and listen to your favourite music while you do your thing. This really does help you to close your mind to anything that is not connected to the job in hand and lets you concentrate on your exercises as well as appearing to make the time fly by.
It is amazing the feeling that you get when you finally get it into your head that no one is looking at you and that all the other people want to do is exercise. This also gives you such a motivational boost that you will find that you can't wait for the next exercise session which will be so much easier and a whole lot less stressful than the first one.
