There are many different exercise routines that base themselves around the benefiting attributes of stretching. There is yoga, Pilates, and others too.
However, you do not have to sign up for an expensive class if you want to enjoy the effects of stretching. All you need to have is a little know-how.
Stretching is when you take advantage of abduction. This is when you move your limbs away from the center of your body.
To build or tone muscle you are going to want to tear the fibers. This is usually done through muscle contraction, but when you work through abduction you are toning muscles in the exact opposite way.
By stretching you increase the elasticity of your muscles, though you do not actually build any mass. So this will give you better control over your muscles.
Not to mention you can burn a very large amount of calories by doing these routines. When you stretch your muscles, you are increasing blood flow to that specific area, this is going to start pulling calories and burning them up.
It is very important to stretch if you are going to be doing other exercises too. Proper stretching is necessary for reducing risk of injury in athletic performance.
However, some stretching can be detrimental to your health if done incorrectly. It is important that you understand how to stretch each muscle that you want affected.
Some stretches can actually cause damage to tendons and ligaments if you are not careful. Ligaments do not have any pain receptors, so if you start ripping one, you may not know you are doing harm until it is too late.
So it is best to stick with the common routines and if you want get help with the fancier stretches. However, if you are not very flexible there is little chance your muscle will stretch far enough to rip any ligaments.
When stretching, you want to feel a bit of a burn, otherwise you are not going to be affecting your muscles. But you also want to be careful that you are not overstretching, because it may cause ischemia to the over stretched muscles.
This is where you cut off the blood supply, and this is not at all something that you want. Research has shown that stretching for sports like jogging and biking and even swimming may actually affect performance in a bad way.
For the most part though, stretching is going to be a wonderful benefit to your fitness and quality of life. And I would recommend that you do it daily after you eat your morning breakfast and before you go to work.
