Well most people usually consider people with almond butter to be rich prudes that are snobby. This is simply not true.
People that eat almond butter have just come to understand that they are not in elementary anymore and that eating regular peanut butter is for children. But the truth is, almond butter is actually pretty expensive.
You have to pay almost twice as much for half the quantity, when it comes to comparing against peanut butter. Don't worry though, because making your own almond butter is easy.
If you are not aware of what almond butter is let me enlighten you. Almond butter is a paste made from a roasted drupe that is indigenous to the Middle East and south Asia.
To make this is easy, first collect your almonds. Set them on a pan and bake them.
If your almonds are prebaked then you can skip this step. If you bought your almonds from the grocerie story you can assume they are baked.
You see almonds are actually poisonous if they haven't been baked, because of all the glykoalkaloids that are in them. Don't worry it takes a lot to kill you, but you can definitely get a bad stomach ache from these uncooked and raw drupe seeds.
Yes you may not have known: almonds are actually a seed and not a nut at all. They come from the center of a drupe; kind of like how pomegranates have all those little juicy seed things in them.
Get a mortar and a pestle, you know like the Indians used, and grind the almonds into a powder. You can also use a heavy duty blender for this if you desire.
If you have a cheap blender, which some of us do, you can grind them up with the mortar and pestle then throw the half crushed almond in the blender to finish the job. After the almonds are crushed to your liking (some like it crunchy and some like it smooth) keep in the blender and add a tablespoon of olive oil for each cup of almonds.
Right now your almond butter should be rather creamy, if you want it to be more crunchy use the mortar and pestle to crush some more nuts an add them to your creamy paste. However if you want it really creamy, just blend it until it is smooth.
Now it is time to decide if you want it salty or not. You can also add other things like honey, or brown sugar.
There are no set proportions for this part, because it is totally left up to your liking and discretion. So after you have it how you like, but it in a jar and let it sit in the refrigerator until you desire to consume some. Destry Masterson is a health and nutrition expert.
