Everywhere that you look, there seems to be one expert or another extolling the virtues of being fit and leading a healthy lifestyle. In today's fast and furious world it sometimes seems like you don't have time to turn around, never mind find time to exercise, even if you wanted to.
Improving your fitness does not necessarily mean that you have to shoot off and join your local gym as there is plenty that you can do before you get to that stage. If however you have any medical condition, it is always best to consult your local GP to discuss your intentions with them and make sure that you are alright to carry on.
There are many things that you can do to help yourself, and the most obvious being the one that most people take for granted, and that is walking. The more effort that you put into walking on a regular basis, the better it is for you, especially as it can improve the condition of your heart and lungs.
Basically you can walk just about whenever and wherever you feel, it's that simple and what's more if you can make walking a regular activity you will be amazed how much better it makes you feel in no time at all. Obviously when you first start, don't overdo it, it is always better to know your limitations and gently increase the amount of effort that you put in over time.
It is really easy to get started, for example if you need to go to your local shops, as long as they are not too far away, leave the car at home and try walking there. Once you have done it the first time, the next time will be easier as you know what to expect and you just carry on from there.
Walking the dog can be another good way to start perhaps making the walk a little longer or a bit more varied so that you and the dog both get a good workout. Some people even walk their dogs in groups as they find it is easier to carry on if you are with friends.
Something worth keeping in mind is the fact that your body will expend more energy when you walk up hills or banks, and of course down them than it will on level ground. This is something that you could progress to when your body becomes accustomed to your new exercise regime.
If you find that you find this more fun than you ever thought it could be you can always join your local gym, as fitness is what they do best. They will offer you everything that you need to carry on the good work that you have done by yourself and help you to reach whichever goal you happen to have set for yourself.
The fact that you started out by doing something simple and worked at should make you feel very proud of yourself. If you carry on with your fitness programme, it will change the way that you feel inside as well as hopefully the way that you look on the outside, for which you will deserve a big pat on the back.
