Wherever you look at the minute, it seems as though everyone is trying to work out and get into shape.
With the fact that rising obesity levels are in the press a lot at present, people are renewing their gym memberships, taking advantage of a free gym pass that many gyms offer or are simply signing up to a gym for the first time as they feel it's going to work best for them in the maintenance of their healthy lifestyle.
As fantastic as working out at a gym is, one of the problems that is so often apparent right throughout the country is that those people who are new to working out in a gym very often injure themselves because they don't fully understand what needs to be done in various respects.
As a lot of people pick up hints and tips from other gym members after their induction, if you start to go to the gym on a free gym pass, you only have your induction to learn, for example, how each piece of equipment works and if you don't ask for help when you're using it, you could easily cause yourself an injury.
Therefore, if you're new to the gym, take a look through these three simple steps to ensure that you don't injure yourself during your work out time.
1. Stretch fully - it's absolutely imperative that both before and after your work out session at the gym you stretch fully, focusing on your body as a whole, rather than one specific area.
Most people don't spend enough time stretching and although a 20 minute swim in the pool might be enough for most to stretch off their muscles after a gym session, 15 minutes should be spent before working out stretching muscles from your calves up to your shoulders.
2. Don't be afraid to ask - there are far too many people out there who are afraid of coming across as stupid or not knowing information that they believe they should.
When it comes to going to the gym, whether you've been told something a dozen times before or not, if you're still not sure how to do something, you need to ask, be it an instructor or another member, as coming across slightly less knowledgeable than you would like is much more acceptable than doing yourself a major injury because of not knowing how to use a certain piece of equipment.
3. Stick to what you know - when you first sign up to a gym, it's always a good idea to stick to the pieces of equipment that you know exactly how to use.
Going to the gym and losing weight isn't a race and you need to remember this - master a few pieces of equipment first and slowly progress once you feel confident.
The most important piece of information you can keep in mind if you're new to the gym is not to worry - everyone was new at one point and as long as you take your time, you'll be almost guaranteed to never cause yourself any type of injury.
