From time to time, unless you're fanatical about exercising, dieting and weight loss, we all put on a few pounds for a variety of reasons.
Some of us go through stages where we drink a little more alcohol than we would normally, others find they are eating out on a more frequent basis than they ideally should be and there are others who don't do anything different in particular, but who find the odd pound creeping on soon turns into half a stone.
Whatever your reason for putting on those few extra pounds every now and again, the most important thing to keep in mind is that you've realised you've gained a few pounds and you're now actively looking to do something about it.
And if you're on the look out for a few simple ways to shed those pounds, the following five steps should help.
1. Cut out the snacks - it's a simple point to keep in mind, but it's one that can be extremely useful when you're looking to lose weight and that's to cut out any type of remotely unhealthy snack, whether that's a plain biscuit or a bowl of popcorn.
You might not think eating a snack here and there has that much of an affect, but once you cut them out, you'll soon be aware of just how much of a contributing factor it can be to your weight gain.
2. Eat three healthy meals - we've all skipped a meal throughout the day for a number of reasons and there are plenty of people who miss a meal regularly, but if you're looking to lose weight, you need to eat three healthy meals a day to ensure that your metabolism is kick started and maintained at an optimum level to burn the food that you eat, rather than having your body store it as fat.
3. Exercise regularly - it doesn't matter whether you head to your local gym for three hours a day or you simply carry out some brisk walking for 30 minutes, five times a week, you need to increase your fitness levels if you want to lose some weight.
Eating healthily might be great, but it needs to be supplemented with an increased fitness regime to see the best and longest lasting results.
4. Have a goal - this may sound like it has nothing to do with actually losing weight, but you'll find it so much easier to keep on track with your weight loss if you have something to aim for, rather than aimlessly trying to shed a few pounds.
Decide on your goal, track your progress and you'll find that you stay focused much easier.
5. Up your water intake - it's recommended that every adult drinks two litres of water a day, which is approximately four pints. Although you should be doing this anyway, it's important that you ensure you're doing it when you're attempting to lose weight as the water will help keep you feeling fuller for longer, meaning you're less likely to snack on unhealthy foods.
Simple and straightforward, these five points give an explanation into losing those few extra pounds that we all gain from time to time. For more information about joining a gym, visit the Fitness First website at http://www.fitnessfirst.co.uk.
