As fantastic as London gyms are and irrelevant of how many people attend the numerous gyms that are located in the city and surrounding areas, for someone who's attending for the first time, there's no doubt that it can be an unnerving experience.
If you've been to a gym outside of the city in the past, you aren't likely to be overly bothered when it comes to signing up to London gyms.
Should you have never attended a gym in the past or you haven't done so in a long time, walking through the doors of any gym can seem like a big task, never mind a gym in one of the busiest cities in the world.
If you're reading this, attend London gyms regularly and are wondering what all the fuss is about, this is almost guaranteed to be because you've become accustomed to the ways and certain unwritten rules of the gym.
For someone who has never been before, however, there's a lot to take in an understand - much of which isn't explained at your standard gym induction - and so the following information has been provided to act as an introduction to London gyms if you're joining for the very first time.
Firstly, you need to be aware that just because you may have seen people being particularly sociable in gyms elsewhere around the country, this doesn't mean that it's going to be the same in London.
The capital city of England is notorious for being a place where you can blend into the background extremely easily and it's this anonymity that a lot of people love. Plus, most people in London seem to always be on the go, meaning their time is particularly precious.
Therefore, if you head to a gym and try to strike up a conversation with someone, don't be hurt if they seem to cut you off - they are likely to be focused so intently on their exercise and sticking to a schedule that they simply don't have the time to talk and in some respects, simply aren't used to people wanting to be so social.
Secondly, it's important to ensure that you are fully prepared for the gym yourself in terms of clothing and accessories.
Something that's not just specific to London gyms, it's absolutely imperative that you have a clean pair of suitable trainers, t-shirt and shorts or tracksuit bottoms, as well as a towel and water bottle.
It's understandable that you're going to get hot and sweaty while you're working out, but it's not nice for yourself or those around you if you're attending the gym in your outfit that you haven't washed after a few previous sessions.
It would also be worthwhile keeping in mind that chances are, you're going to be paying a premium for London gyms if you're wanting something that isn't standard.
For instance, many people attend gyms in the city that are open 24 hours right next to their office due to their work schedule and although you may not end up paying a substantial amount more for this privilege, you are likely to pay more than what could be considered a standard membership fee, so it's always worthwhile working out when the best time to attend for you is and thinking about the location of the gym, too.
London gyms aren't as daunting or different as many people make out, but they do have some differences and so it's worthwhile understanding them fully to ensure your first time at a London gym is as exciting and beneficial as you hope it to be.
