Understanding The Food Pyramid

The USDA(united states department of agriculture) does its best to create a diet that is going to work for everyone, but they cannot go to each person one by one and start telling them how to eat. So they had to settle with some sort of pseudo-one-size-fits-all diet.

The thing is every person on the planet has unique nutrition needs and maybe even wants. For instance according to the pyramid we are supposed to get around 6-11 serving of grains.

That is around a loaf of bread, a bag of bagels, or a box of cereal and they recommend you get that before lunch time. That is probably good if you are highly active and constantly burning calories throughout the day.

I think most people maybe get one or two serving of grains and it is usually in a bowl of cereal that is packed with sugar. It is interesting that the Atkins diet advocates the non-consumption of grains, where the pyramid says we should eat an exuberant amount.

A bowl of cereal is going to have around 150 calories so if you had as much grain as the USDA you would be getting around 1650 calories, and that is just from grains. That leaves 350 calories, according to the FDAs RDA (food and drug association) (recommended daily amount).

But you still have four servings of fruit, five servings of vegies, three servings of dairy, and three servings of protein. This is a lot of food.

I could maybe eat the grains if I was giving a day; but to get them all the servings that are recommended by the pyramid, you would have to be rich and have a huge stomach. The thing about this too, you have to be eating raw and healthy whole foods of these.

If you are eating around 30 servings of food each day, and they are sweetened with sugars and syrups and yummy grease, you are liable to gain a lot of weight. Excessive weight gain can lead to obesity, diabetes, and even death.

So I suppose if you are a grown man that is about 6 and half feet tall, eating only healthy whole foods... well then following the pyramid will do you good. However, many of us are little more than 5 feet tall, especially you Mexican immigrants.

You will have to decide for yourself what is healthy for you. Learn about what different foods are going to do inside of your body, and how they will affect your health.

Be consciously aware of your health, and trust no one with it but yourself. These are the effective health tips of the 21st century; times are changing and you better adapt if you want to hold to your health.
