The best way to build powerful muscle is through multi joint exercises; these are also called compound exercises. When working exercises that use more than one joint, you are also using many different muscles, meaning that you are going to burn many more calories.
Isolation exercises, the kind that you do on machines like butterfly press, they do exactly what's implied: isolate specific muscles. This is great if you are trying to build some glamour, but for the most part trainers and trainees want to enhance performance.
Isolation exercises are also not going to do too much for weight loss, because they only target one muscle and before you can burn a large amount of calories your muscles are burnt. So that is why we are going to do dynamic exercises.
These are exercises like burpees or lunge curls. Both of these exercises are going to incorporate use of every muscle in your body.
Burpees have long been used as a military exercise for training. It consists of three different exercises rolled into one: the squat, pushup and lastly a jump.
What this does is it spreads tension throughout every muscle, thus creating as much caloric burn as possible, because you have your entire body striving to torch those suckers. This also starts to build some hard core strength-I mean strong core strength, not hardcore strength... well actually it will do both.
The lunge curl is a great exercise for your entire body. Hold some dumbbells, one in each hand, and as you do a lunge curl your dumbbells.
This is going to work your biceps, legs, and abdomen, your abdomen more than you might think. Throughout the entire exercise you are going to have to maintain your balance, this is the main function of core muscles.
Another great exercise is the squat press. Do this with dumbbells in your hands, and when you come up from the squat press the dumbbells into the air.
This is going to work out your back muscles, your shoulders, and your legs and again this one is going to affect all those core muscles as well. These exercises are great for overall fitness.
The great thing about these is you do not have to spend money on any fancy gym membership. You can just exercise from your own home, and you still get a highly intensive dynamic workout that is going to reverberate throughout your whole body.
When doing these workouts with weights, start very small. The body building and lifting communities may discourage such combinations of exercises, but as long as you are not going beyond your limits you will be fine.
