Core workouts are what make you powerful, they make you lean and mean, and these are the exercises that make you perform well in sports and athletic pursuits. When we do strength training but forget to work our cores, we sacrifice functional muscle ability for glamorous veneer muscles.
If you do not wish to use your muscles then having only glamorous veneer muscles is going to be just fine, but for the majority of men who are working out for purposes besides looking great, there are also core exercises. The first thing you should know is that any exercise that requires balance and tension is going to work deep into the core, some exercises more than others.
That means that every single body-weight exercise is going to be an effective core exercise. When you have done pushups, you have probably noticed that in the beginning few reps, you have a perfect posture and form, but as reps continue, your back begins to sag and you begin to become sloppy.
Even if you are doing twenty sloppy pushups, you are not going to get the same effects from just one proper pushup. This exercise puts an amount of strain on all the muscles in your torso and even down into your legs.
So while you are building and bulking your pectorals, you are also tightening your abdomen and your back muscles. Once you have maxed out on your pushups, it is a good idea to further obliterate core muscles by planking.
This is done much like pushups, except without the push part. Get in a pushup position except place your elbows on the ground and hold your torso parallel with the ground beneath you.
If you have just done a good amount of pushups, then you will notice immediately the effect this has on the torso and core. When planking, the main thing is to hold your form for as long as possible, and if you are looking for more of a challenge you can practice lifting your limbs one at a time.
This is my personal morning routine to keep my abdomen looking muscular but flat. I personally do not like to have the pop-out belly look, but I know some guys that don't mind having there abdomen protrude past their pectorals.
Taking up routines like Pilates, yoga, or just aerobic routines, are all going to exercise your core. Other core exercises include pull-ups, squats, handstand press (use a wall for balance if necessary), get creative and see if you can target every muscle in particular with a different body weight routine.
