Food Pyramid And Other Diets

If you go anywhere people are going to tell you abstract things about diet and nutrition. It seems that everyone has their own ideas about what is right and what is wrong, and who's to say who is right?

There is the Gracie diet that says if you are eating any acidic fruit such as pineapple or mangos then you should wait 3 to 4 hours before you eat any other foods. There is Mister Atkins idea of nutrition, just cut all the carbs out of your diet.

Wait a minute no carbs? Doesn't the FDA say that we need more of those than anything else?

The FDA is a federal organization; they wouldn't tell us something that isn't true... would they? Truth is carbs are easily turned into fat, but they are also easily turned into energy.

If you want to lose weight without exercising, then cutting carbs is a good idea. But if you are dieting to lose weight and also maintain muscle mass you will need some solid exercise, and for that exercise you will need some solid fuel: carbohydrates.

Don't worry the FDA isn't trying to kill you... I don't think. However, they are just a team of nutritionists paid on a government salary (probably with nice fatty pensions), so they really do not have any incentive to find the best and most effective diets-but that is just politics.

The fact of the matter is there isn't a one size fits all diet, for each person there are going to be unique needs and wants. Some people are addicted to chocolate, and others are going to have a hard time trying to give up beer.

Everyone has their indulgences and their vices. Some people go to extremes to beat their vices and their weight.

Like those anorexic or bulimic women or maybe men, they have gone too far to the extreme. Some people will even become vegans; this means no meat, no dairy, and nothing that derived from anything with a face.

This works for some people, there is very little fat intake in a diet like this, but also a lot less protein. Usually a vegan is going to be relatively small, and probably relatively weak.

Then there are those pure carnivores that only eat meat from beast with a heartbeat. Ok, hardly anyone does that, only aborigines as far as I know.

But people, who eat mostly meat, tend to be a bit larger and usually a bit stronger too. This is because of the mass amounts of protein they are acquiring.

To really understand nutrition, you have to be self-aware. Our bodies know best.

If you feel like you ate too much, then you probably did. If you feel like you are craving salty potato chips you are probably low on sodium.

Become aware of what you want to do with your life. Then your diet will naturally come secondary.
