When you go shopping at the grocery store, you may start noticing certain brands of the healthier items claiming that they are GMO free or non GMO.
You may be starting to wonder what the heck GMO is. It means genetically modified organisms. There is a scientist and company called Monsanto, and they have come up with some special seeds.
These seeds help them to make money from farmers who are trying to raise crops without pests. These super seeds produce plants that have substance within the plant to kill pests or to resist the Round-Up-Ready products.
The problem that many people are seeing is that animals who eat these plants tend to die, become sterile, or have other organ problems. The biggest thing to watch out for are the corn and soy products.
Make sure that if you ever get soy or corn that it is always organic, or you will be consuming something that is bad for your health. There can also be problems with the potatoes and tomatoes, so be careful what you buy.
In recent studies, it has shown that when animals are given a choice, they instinctively know that the GMO corn or other products are bad and will choose the normal corn.
There's a story of a guy who had a sack of regular dried corn and a sack of GMO corn in his garage one winter. In the spring, he saw that the GMO corn was untouched by mice and rats that were prevalent, but the regular corn was all eaten up.
There are farmers in India who were deceived into using and buying Monsanto seeds for free or at a really cheap price if they would sign a contract to only buy Monsanto seed from then on. These farmers found that they could not reseed or reuse the plants and were locked into a deal to only buy the expensive GMO seeds.
These farmers realized the big mistake they had made as they went bankrupt since they had to keep buying the GMO seeds. They also had many animals die.
Many of these farmers committed suicide because of how the whole deal had ruined their livelihoods and their lives. Some countries know about the problem and have laws to keep Monsanto products out of their countries, they don't want similar problems.
If you go to GMO sites online that explain the dangers of using these products, you will see information about how ingestion of these products contribute to your own stomach becoming its own pesticide factory, which is possibly irreversible.
Many people are avoiding any possible GMO foods by only buying organic foods. You could generally consider yourself safe if the UPS code starts with a 3 or 4 for conventionally grown or 9 for organic instead of the 8 which signifies GMO products.
However, anything with corn or soy in America is guaranteed to be GMO unless it is organic. Be really careful what you buy, become informed and spread the word.
