There are lots of diets you can try nowadays and they tend to go in and out of fashion. One type of diet that has been very popular in the last few years is the low carbohydrate diet. These diets consist of limiting your intake of carbohydrates, as the name suggests, and eating more proteins and fats. However do the benefits of this type of diet actually outweigh the risks?
Well one thing you can say about this diet is that it can help you lose a lot of weight in a relatively short space of time. Let me tell you quickly how it works.
The body is basically forced to produce it's energy from the additional fat and protein that you consume. This is done by limiting the production of insulin because of the fact that you are not eating foods rich in carbohydrates.
However the major drawback is that this weight loss can be attributed to a loss of water and a reduction in your muscles. Furthermore the initial rapid weight loss may only be temporary.
So you may not actually keep the weight off once you go on one of these diets, whether it's the Stillman diet, the Hollywood diet or the Atkins diet, for instance. Yes they will help you lose weight, but it may well be a waste of time if you put it back on again in the future.
It is also worth bearing in mind that there are several possible side effects that you may observe when you go on a low carbohydrate diet. For instance you may get ketosis, which results in bad breath and may also cause weakness and nausea in some cases.
Your body will also miss out on a lot of vitamins and nutrients during the whole time you are on one of these diets. That's because important sources such as fruit and vegetables are not a major component of these diets. Plus because you are taking on a lot of protein, you may overload your kidneys.
You may even cause liver damage and bone disorders if you are not careful. Not to mention all the damage that you are doing to your heart, and your health generally, by eating a lot of saturated fats.
The point is that low carbohydrate diets have been well publicised in recent years, and have been endorsed by a lot of celebrities. However they don't exactly promote healthy eating, and when you add in all the possible side effects, I don't personally think the benefits of low carbohydrate diets outweigh the possible risks when you take everything into consideration.
