Walking is something that we learn when we are about twelve months old, for some of us it is when we are around 16 months old. The reason it takes us so long to learn is because of how hard it is.
You may be thinking," hey wait a minute, I think walking is easy". Well that is because you have known how to walk for the past thirty years, but it still hasn't got you to move out of your parent's, now has it?
Walking requires the use of 26 bones all in our feet wrapped in 20 muscles with 33 joint's and 116 ligaments. Getting these all to work in synchronization is nothing short of a miracle especially for someone who still lives with his parents.
Why do I give you these seemingly inconsequential facts, well because it actually has a lot to do with why and how walking is so great for your health. You see to strengthen our bodies we have to exert energy and to burn calories we have to use muscles.
Even though I listed all that stuff about our feet, I didn't include every muscle that is used when walking. You see, walking requires the use of every single muscle in our body.
From swinging our arms to supporting our heads with our necks we are going to have to spend energy working these muscles, meaning that we are going to be burning calories throughout our entire body. And why do we want to burn calories.
That's right; they are the things that are making you fat. Excessive calories are a hard thing to avoid in this day of age.
From fast food to sit coms we really don't do much of anything physical any more... as a society I mean. There are some of you probably reading this that don't live on your mom's couch, and you few people are probably also quite fit.
I am talking to the people who are not fit. Studies have shown that simply standing for an additional 30 minutes each day (the length of one television program) can actually burn up to thirty pounds in a year.
That is nothing to sneeze at. Thirty pounds is a lot of grease to be holding on to underneath your skin.
Now imagine if instead of standing watching a television show every day, you went outside and walked around for thirty minutes. I would say you could close to double the effectiveness of your thirty minute training program.
C'mon why not try it? What is there to lose besides all that weight?
