Have you ever tried to be able to taste your food while plugging your nose? It's extremely difficult to be able to taste the flavor of food that you are eating when you don't have a sense of smell.
This can work to your advantage if you are trying to eat something that you hate. For instance, many pregnant women think that they have to drink cow's milk while they are pregnant or their unborn child won't have strong bones.
This is a fallacy, of course, since greens and beans and most plant foods have some calcium in them. And, cow's milk actually causes a multitude of diseases including osteoporosis.
But, the fact remains that many pregnant women have been deceived into thinking that they have to drink milk whether they like it or not. So, a handy trick is to plug the nose while drinking the milk, so that the disgusting taste won't bother these particular women.
On the other hand, there are many people who love the taste of milk. But, even for them, if they become congested because of drinking so much milk, they are then unable to taste their food if their noses are plugged up with the mucus of congestion.
Many studies have been done to discover the differences in taste in connection with the sense of smell. This is something that most people don't even think about.
Most people never realize that their sense of smell influences their ability to taste their food, which is a very interesting discovery. One example of this phenomenon of what can happen with the sense of taste is how people are not able to taste their foods very well when they are sick.
Usually the type of sickness we are talking about here is a type that will affect your sense of smell. Having a cold or a sinus infection can make you lose your sense of taste temporarily.
You probably don't realize as much how much of a connection there is to the smell and aroma food can have. Many times, it may seem like there is no smell to the food at all.
Some foods have a strong aroma and others have a mild aroma. What happens when the food has no smell or aroma whatsoever?
The food with little or no aroma also seems to lack in flavor, however as it becomes moistened in the mouth the aromas can start to return and influence the taste. Usually, the people that have little or no sense of smell also notice a lack of the sense of taste.
These conditions can be caused by accidents to the face, operations, surgeries, medications, sicknesses and even old age. Eating disorders can become a lack of interest in eating or eating too much.
Food can taste good again. There are certain things that medical doctors can do to help a person regain their sense of smell, and there are natural things that can be done to promote healing from within.
