The leaves are falling and so is the temperature, sniffle and sneezing season will soon be here. The shorter light hours, long work hours, comfort food and central heating can all take its toll on our bodies. This can leave our systems unbalanced, leaving us susceptible to the nasty bugs that winter can bring. Here are some handy tips and information to help keep you healthy throughout the season.
Tip 1: Eat Yummy Autumnal Food Apples are high in vitamin C, which in some studies prove to boost immunity. The fresher the better! Try British varieties of apples such as pippins and russets, not as likely to have travelled too far. Nuts like walnuts, chestnuts and almonds are in season right now. Packed full with antioxidants and nutrients including Vitamin E, Selenium and Zinc. A handful a day help keeps the nasties away! Garlic is now in season and contains Allicin, Ajoene and Thiosulfinates three powerful compounds that help the body prevent and fight infections. So add a bit extra to your stews and soups, the more you crush the garlic the more immune busting compounds are released. Tip 2: Let Supplements Fill in the Gaps Echinacea is very effective when used at the onset of a cold, flu, or other infection. This native American plant includes anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic and anti- inflammatory properties. Zinc: There is evidence that taking Zinc lozenges as soon as cold symptoms appear may reduce how long a cold lasts.
Tip 3: Massage Can Boost Your Immunity The lymphatic system is one of our major defences to defend off infection and heal injuries in our body. Lymphatic fluid carries bug fighting antibodies and white blood cells throughout our bodies. The lymphatic system does not have its own pump like our hearts it relies on movement and exercise to move the lymph fluid around our bodies. Massage is clinically proven to greatly assist with the circulation of lymph and blood circulation and help immunity.
Tip 4: Drink Plenty of Water Water should be your best friend during the coming months. With harsh weather conditions and central heating your skin and body needs this stuff to keep you hydrated. Try warm water and slice of lemon in the morning to get your digestive system going!
Tip 5: Get Your Wellies on! Studies show that moderate exercise can boost the production of white cells which fight infection, thereby strengthening the immune system. Visit one of our many beautiful parks in Brighton or jump on a bus and head up to the stunning South Downs. Get out there this season, and take in the glorious colours and smells of autumn!
