I know you this is not the first time you have heard the expression you are what you eat. That phrase has been pumped into your head ever since you learned the definition of nutrition.
Some people live by the words like it is gospel and others remain agnostic. The truth is most all foods are going to have a good amount of nutrition in them... most anyway.
There are the foods that are not healthy for you at all, e.g. fast foods, processed foods (like from gas station freezers) and, of course, junk food. These are all obviously unhealthy for you.
The die-hard believers won't touch these foods with a twelve and a half foot poll because they know if they do their entire physiological make up will change. The ignorant blindly follow the most recent special and usually go for the two-for-ones.
On both ends of the spectrum there are extremes. On the one hand you have the Pita chip eater, who is not going to be your friend unless you live off salmon and Greek yogurt.
Then you have the more accepting, less put together Domino's pizza eater who will be your friend but you're not sure if you want to be his. There is segregation growing between the health nuts, and the meat heads.
I believe if we are not careful things may get out of hand. The Healthy affluent white people will eventually create a grocery market with prices so high that most want-to-be-health-nuts wont be afford the food.
This will lessen their numbers, making them feel like the star belly sneetches. With their few numbers they will feel more unique and, subsequently, better than you.
When the crevice in the market starts to open, the prices for the poor-man's food is going to lessen. They will have more consumers, and more consumers' means that they can lower prices.
So what are us normal people going to do to prevent the health nuts from creating an aristocracy and the food-stampers from eroding the market? The answer is we have to raise practical awareness.
Look you can eat pizza once a week, and you won't die (but please consult your physician before doing so). Then again, of course you shouldn't be eating pizza every day.
The problem with people isn't that they are eating bad foods; it is that they are just not eating any good foods. We have to get the common man, the normal joe, to be aware of nutrition.
You need vitamins and minerals that come from fruits and vegetables. You want to have whole foods that are made from good nutrients, but that doesn't mean you should avoid eating out like it's the plaque.
In fact there are many places you can go to eat food, and still get a fair amount of healthy nutrients. It is called common sense, it is what America needs.
