I was at a low point in my life: I had just come back from a work trip, which had its ups and downs, but mostly it had taken a toll on my body. I had dropped nearly 30 pounds in just under two weeks.
I had been aboard the Apollo 17 ship and it was certainly exciting watching the earth fall behind us as we were propelled into space. I felt as if the heavens themselves were opening up to me.
For a week and a half I had transcended the distance of space. I felt there was nothing I couldn't do.
Never in my life could I have been prepared for what was about to happen on the ride back to earth. As we entered the earth's atmosphere we were suddenly overwhelmed with the pressure of the earth's gravity, and not to mention the G's that were being forced on us through our flaming descension into the ocean.
Back home I had become a skeleton, living only on sparsely backed preserved foods in plastic baggies took its toll on my physique. Then of course there was the bone density that I had lost.
Living in zero gravity for nearly 10 days can do a lot to your bones, and unless you have experienced it you may not realize. So I had to start regaining my fitness from my very core, my skeleton.
That is when my employer NASA put me to work on a mini tramp. Since I had been in zero gravity and that is what had robbed me of my bone density, it only made sense that I should work against gravity to regain my bone density.
That is precisely how these mini tramps or rebounders work. They utilize gravitational force, this oxidates your blood and strengthens your body at a cellular level, meaning from the inside out.
It was a win/ win because at the time my bones were so weak that I couldn't do a lot of common exercises like running. The unique thing about these rebounders is that the work in rebounds.
So there is no sudden impact that hits your joints and shocks your nerves, but it is rather a continuous motion and strain on your muscles through the entire routine. NASA actually said that using this as an aerobic exercise was going to be 63 percent more effective than running.
Not that I could run, I would have just broken my legs if I tried. So I guess it is a good thing I had an exercise that was more than doubly effective.
I would recommend this routine to everyone, even to people who have never shot beyond the atmosphere. It is great for all ages and all social sects.
