Mankind has suffered from kidney stones, a very painful urological disorder, for many centuries. A kidney stone is essentially a hard mass made from crystals that has been separated from urine within a person's urinary tract. Sometimes they will remain small enough that it eventually exits the body without pain or even being discovered. However, bigger types of kidney stones are extremely painful when passing through the urinary track and can even block the flow of urine.

Sharp intense pain, coupled with potential nausea and vomiting, sometimes even fever, can occur. Occasionally blood may appear in the urine as the stone tries to travel through the ureter. Recurrent urinary tract infections, especially in men, may also suggest the presence of a hidden pathology such as stones. It is advisable to immediately contact a doctor with these symptoms.

Though only approximately five-six percent of the U.S. population has suffered from kidney stones, the number of people who have experienced them has increased over the years. Men, especially those in their 40s, are at greater risk than women. The risk even rises in men after the age of 70. Additionally, those that have experienced a kidney stone are more likely to suffer from them in the future.

There are however, precautions that people can take to avoid this unpleasant episode. Drinking lots of water can help break apart stones and assists in keeping the urine clear. Losing weight can help as well, since overweight people are more considerably susceptible to them. Diabetes can cause kidney stones. So if you suffer from this condition its best to get it under control as soon as possible. Avoid too much vitamin D, C and citrus juices such as grapefruit juice, since research has shown that they increase the risk of stones. Also, try your best to exercise daily and get your heart rate up. Inactive people and those with a sedentary lifestyle are more prone to urinary problems, such as the formation of stones, than those who exercise regularly.

Lastly, if you have suffered from, or continue to experience, kidney stones you ought to consult with your doctor about creating a diet that will potentially help you prevent them. Increasing your consumption levels of calcium and fiber and decreasing your intake of protein and salt are both examples of transforming your daily diet to prevent the formation of stones. You can also talk with your doctor about the different medicines and drug therapies that are available.
